How it went, from start to adjustment.
Omega-3 is the name of a family of fats, not a single substance. Plants such as flax and chia offer ALA. Oily fish such as sardines and salmon offer EPA and DHA. Most of the well-known omega-3 studies were done with EPA and DHA.
Full Ômega, from Akmos's Longue Vie line, is made of plant oils: flaxseed, evening primrose and borage, plus vitamin E. There are 60 capsules, two a day. In other words, it is a plant omega-3, ALA, alongside oils rich in GLA, an omega-6.
The body can turn ALA into EPA and DHA, but only a little. Most studies estimate under 10% to EPA and 0 to 4% to DHA. Young women seem to convert more: one small study of six participants estimated about 21% to EPA and 9% to DHA.
And the heart? The Cochrane review of omega-3, with dozens of trials and over 100,000 people, concluded that ALA may slightly lower the risk of cardiovascular events and arrhythmia, on low-quality evidence. For EPA and DHA supplements the same review found little or no effect on mortality.
Evening primrose and borage oils are often linked to skin and the menstrual cycle. For eczema, a 2013 Cochrane review found no benefit over placebo. Worth knowing before choosing the capsule for that reason.
So who is it for? If you do not eat fish and want a source of ALA, the capsule is one option, as is a spoonful of ground flaxseed in your food. If you do eat fish, two portions a week remain the reference in the main health guidelines.
The vitamin E in the formula is an antioxidant, as the pack says. Anyone on blood thinners or facing surgery should talk to their doctor before taking oil and vitamin E capsules. This text is for information and does not replace professional advice.
